One-pan/one-pot meals are my favourites and this English breakfast recipe is definitely one of them.
What is English breakfast?
A full English Breakfast is also known as a ‘fry-up’ and consists of fried eggs, fried sausages, fried bacon, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried bread and often a slice of fried black or white or pudding. Black pudding is similar to blood wurst. British breakfast is always accompanied by tea or coffee and a nice hot toast with butter. Nice, right? Once in a while, it is wow, exactly what I needed.
My English breakfast version
It is easy, convenient, a lot quicker and most cheering of all, a lot less washing up to do! Yupee! We really do prefer this style and have been making it for a good few years. Nothing spectacular, I know, but just as a time-saving idea.
All you need for this breakfast is a skillet, a medium-low heat and sourdough bread or any nice homemade bread and of course, a cup of coffee or tea. only then, you are in heaven, well, I definitely am whenever I have this to start my day.
A nice British breakfast will always make my day a better one, no doubt! Imagine that nice soda bread, how good would that be with that perfectly sunny side up fried egg! At least to start any of your day, especially a weekend ;-).
Not sure how you feel but I could have English breakfast almost every day if I could. Sadly, it’s one of those breakfasts I like to sit down and enjoy which makes it more of a weekend one.
I wish sometimes I had more time in the mornings but for now, that's not an option really. Waking up at 5:30 (ish) every day (school days) is a must. I do enjoy it though and I know I will miss it terribly when kids will be flying the nest.
I don’t know what I would do without my hubby, he is such a great help and a real sweetheart. I don’t tell him this often- it’s funny I’m confessing here. Haha.
Nice things have to be shared to recognise these and show gratitude. It is a blessing to have such a beautiful human being next to me and such a great dad to our kids. All hard work, you know but got there. Thank you, darling (not sure he will read this though 😉 ).
Coming to this, when I started sharing my recipes I was very uncomfortable talking about my personal life. I did come a long way. I feel more and more confident in writing and sharing here bits of my daily activities, personal stories and happenings. If you were to ask a few years ago whether this will happen my answer was probably going to be ...no, I do not think so.
Eggs are definitely my saviour most days. Whenever I run out of ideas or time when it's so hard to know what to have or make for a quick breakfast. They are great in so many ways, so versatile. Plenty of dishes could be made using eggs, whether that’s sweet or savoury.
Why make it harder for ourselves? Let’s just simplify matters here.
Just take a pan/skillet out (which is what I’ve used and preferred) and let’s get cooking this amazing day starter.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to making a nice English breakfast. At least this is how I feel ( I might get told off though), please don’t be harsh on me. If eggs, baked beans, nice sausages and mushrooms are there, it’s all great! Bacon, yes of course but I feel it is too much for us to have both so we alternate.
Yes, there are preferences on the eggs and how these are made. A crispy fried egg at times, oh yeasss. Cooked in a tomato base ....Mmmmm is our choice most of the time though, shakshouka style.
I tend to use sausages a little more often than bacon not sure why. Hash browns are lovely too but not my cup of tea at breakfast; only because I find it a little too much so, I rather have a slice of crispy homemade bread instead.
I do love hashbrowns though, don’t get me wrong, please. A good hash brown is the best thing ever, potatoes, right? I love them!
I have stated that preparation time is five minutes but truthfully that is an overestimation.
Apart from washing the mushrooms and slicing those, there is not much preparation involved. Opening a can of beans and cracking a couple of eggs as well as taking the sausages out of the fridge. This is it!

English breakfast in a flash
Ingredients
- 4 sausages * chipolata style
- 4-5 mushrooms washed and sliced
- 2 eggs large organic
- 2 rashers of bacon optional
- 1 tin baked beans
- ½ tin chopped tomatoes optional *
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pinch salt
- ⅓ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 2 tablespoon fresh Herbs to garnish optional
- 1 pinch thyme dry or fresh
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet on a medium fire. Add the sausages and the bacon if you choose to add it and fry for 3 minutes tossing them every now and again.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for a further minute or two until those get nice and brown.
- Set the sausages and the mushrooms to one side of the skillet. Pour the baked beans and the tomatoes on the other side along with the Worcester sauce, thyme, mix them well together to blend and bring them to a bubbling point. This will take 2 min.
- Using a spoon create a couple of dents into the beans mixture and crack in the eggs. Cook on low-medium fire for approximately 4-7 minutes depending on how you want them cooked. I always love them runny.
- Season with extra salt (if the bacon was not used) and a good indulgent pinch of freshly ground pepper. Garnish with some fresh herbs sprinkled beautifully on top.

This is a great breakfast to make when you have a bit of time to savor the meal and enjoy your coffee. I believe every cuisine have something similar and eggs in a sauce tastes so good. And you mentioned your Hubby - mine is terrific as well. A great help in the kitchen. I'm going to have to try the sausages you use in the dish - they're already on my grocery list.

When I was in England this breakfast was one of my favorite treats. I will take savory over sweet at any time, and the eggs with the beans and sausage is delicious! I can't wait to create your version at home.

I really like how colorful your dish looks. It can easily make the day just with its looks. And I know what you mean - the tastier the dish, the more time you want to spend enjoying it, the less likely you are to make it during the week. So even though you want to have it as often as possible, it is its taste that makes it a rear guest in the house!
Ramona says
Absolutely true, dear Laura, thank you so much! I am such a foodie and truly love to fully enjoying a good meal especially at the weekends when it does happen, not as often as I wish, to have more time to do such things.
