This homemade avocado mayonnaise with horseradish is flavorful, and smooth, an alternative to traditional mayonnaise. It is the perfect mayonnaise recipe for those seeking a healthier, oil- and egg-free vegan option. It contains beautifully ripe avocados as the base, providing a rich texture and a vibrant green color. The horseradish adds a zesty kick, making it quite a unique and delicious addition to sandwiches, salads, or a fabulously healthy dip.
This homemade avocado mayonnaise recipe is super easy to make and it is rich in good fats lower in calories and boosts your body for good functioning. I thought of adding a healthier recipe as an alternative to the classic homemade mayonnaise or to this Hollandaise sauce.

Avocado mayonnaise with horseradish goes well with beef stake, this giant lamb burger or, make this potato salad even more nutritious by adding a couple of tablespoons of this healthy avocado mayo. I also add this avo mayo to my pulled lamb in pita pockets. I will add a few more options and suggestions to give you more ideas and inspiration on where to use this delicious and healthy mayonnaise.
🥘 Ingredients for avocado mayonnaise
Here are the very few ingredients ( all fresh and super healthy) that you will need to make this vegan mayo.
- avocado - these have to be creamy and perfectly ripe;
- mustard - I use any mustard I have in the pantry - dijon or English mustard or a mix;
- horseradish root (fresh) - this will need to be grated;
- black pepper ( I used mixed peppercorns) - freshly ground;
- apple cider vinegar - I always use a good organic with mother cider vinegar;
- Celtic salt - it is the best and cleanest nutritious salt out there;
- key lime - you will only need the juice but if it is organic unwaxed, feel free to use some zest too - it gives a delicious zesty touch;
- garlic - do not miss this - it is the best addition and flavor and goodness.
See the recipe card below for the exact quantities.
👩🏻🍳 How to make homemade avocado mayonnaise
Firstly, gather all the ingredients 😄 and this is the hardest bit, I promise 🙌 !
Here are the 4 steps to make this delish and creamy healthy egg-free avocado mayo.
1. Chop or grate finely the garlic and the horseradish.
2. Add the garlic, salt, horseradish, mustard, and lime juice to a blender.
3. Add the black pepper and the super creamy avocado to the rest of the ingredients.
4. Blend the avocado mayonnaise for a minute or so until you get a nice and smooth mayonnaise.
Hint: The avocados must be very nice and ripe to get the best and smoothiest results.
If you leave the seed in the jar the avocado will not oxidate- worth trying! I also add a couple of thin lemon slices and a drizzle of olive oil to avoid the avocado getting brown and unappetizing.
🤹🏻 Substitutions
- Horseradish - if you do not have access to fresh horseradish root, use a tablespoon or two of cream of horseradish found in the supermarkets. Wasabi paste will work as wonderfully as all the other options.
- Mustard - use any but if you don't like it use an extra tablespoon of cider vinegar.
- Celtic salt - kosher or Himalayan salts are a great salt alternative as Celtic is not a regular salt but the best one to use as it's clean and packed in minerals.
- Freshly milled mixed pepper - use regular black or cayenne pepper instead.
💞 Variations
- Spicy
- make it spicy by adding some green or red chili fresh or some flakes.
- Deluxe
- add crispy onions or some almond oil or peanut butter. Oh my!
- Experiment with flavors
- feel free to add other herbs and spices, such as cilantro, parsley, or smoked paprika, to customize the flavor.
- Adjust the level of horseradish to your taste.
- Start with a smaller amount and add more if you prefer a stronger kick.
- Adjust its consistency
- If the mayonnaise is too thick, you can add a small amount of water, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
🍽 Ways to serve avocado mayo
Avocado mayo can be used for or served with a whole range of dishes. Its creamy texture pairs well as a topping for burgers, a spread for sandwiches, as a dip, or a salad dressing like this potato salad! I also use it a lot in my homemade coleslaw.
Here is one concrete example of how to serve this mayo in a very delicious way.
📦 Storage
The best way to store this vegan mayo recipe is to put it into a glass or ceramic container or jar, shake well to make sure there are no air pockets/bubbles, and ideally use a screw lid and close the container. Keep refrigerated for a good few days. I always drizzle olive oil to coat the surface so it does not turn dark brown in color due to oxidation.
How long does homemade avocado mayonnaise last?
Homemade avocado mayonnaise should be used within 4 days. Since it does not contain preservatives, it will have a shorter shelf life than store-bought mayonnaise.
📌 Top tips
Choose ripe avocados: Ripe avocados will blend more easily and provide a smoother texture.
Use fresh ingredients: Fresh lemon juice and garlic will enhance the flavor of the mayonnaise so do not forget adding those.
💭 Recipe FAQs
Using avocados gives the mayo its creamy texture. Using avocado oil won't achieve this texture and isn't required for this recipe.
Oh yes! No doubt about this. Why? Because it does not contain any added oils, avocados provide healthy fats, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals.
Freezing the mayonnaise will cause its texture to become watery and grainy therefore it isn't recommended that you freeze it.
A blender or food processor will give the smoothest results but you can also use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocados and then just mix in the other ingredients. Expect the texture to be chunkier with occasional lumps.
Yes. It is.

I will be trying this recipe, luv the horseradish idea a lot but what I need to ask you today is about that bread in the photo with the mayo, red onion, tomato and egg - open faced. Is this something that you made please?? I would love to include it when I make the same.
Ramona says
Hi Brenda, thank you for your question and your lovely comment. I do bake my breads and it is a bread that I baked. I do experience with baking breads, add seeds, and mix different types of flour. I always have my own baked sliced bread in my freezer 😉
