This recipe requires no juicer. Simple and very quick to make with just a blender, a food processor, or even a hand mixer.

🥘Ingredients needed for wellness shots

There are just a few ingredients that you will need for this recipe but you may use as many as you wish and customise to your liking.

All the ingredients needed for the ginger turmeric shots: turmeric, ginger, celtic salt, cayenne, pepper, grapefruit, orange.
  • ginger - use fresh organic as much as possible
  • turmeric - use fresh organic one too if you can
  • oranges - only peeled
  • grapefruit - take all the bitter skin off in between the segments
  • water - use mineral or bottled good quality water (definitely not tap water)
  • salt - I always use Celtic, kosher or Himalayan salt
  • lemon - find organic unwaxed lemon so you can use the whole fruit
  • black pepper - this is a must-use ingredient so that you get the full range of benefits from the turmeric
  • cayenne pepper - I know it sounds a bit crazy but you will not even feel this - the benefits are great though

See the recipe card below for more precise quantities.

🔪How to make turmeric shots

  1. Preparation:
    • Wash and peel the turmeric and ginger roots and all the remaining ingredients.
    • Chop them into smaller pieces for easier blending.
  2. Blending:
    • In a blender, combine turmeric, lemon, grapefruit, ginger, and water.
    • Blend until it looks pretty smooth.
  3. Straining:
    • Strain the mixture using a fine mesh, a sieve, or a cheesecloth to extract the liquid.
    • Discard the pulp or save it for other recipes.
  4. Add Lemon and Sweetener:
    • Here at this stage, you do this if you choose to use any - I personally do not use any sweetener.
  5. Seasoning:
    • Add a pinch of black pepper to enhance the bioavailability of turmeric.
  6. Consistency:
    • If the mixture is too concentrated, dilute with water to your liking.

Step 3 - Add the water and whizz for 1 minute or so.

Step 4 - Strain the mixture through a colander.

Step 5 - Bottle it and refrigerate.

Hint: do not fill the blender up, just like I did as you will ask for trouble and some afterwards cleaning. 😀 Do it in two or more batches if necessary.

💞Substitutions

  • Water - instead of water, you can use coconut water or homemade almond milk.
  • Grapefruit - use any other fruit you may like if grapefruit isn't your thing. I add berries like blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries. Yummy!
  • Cayenne pepper - you may think the cayenne pepper will make this wellness elixir spicy. No, it doesn't unless you use a lot more.

You may add some sweetness to it if you wish, although I do not recommend it. If you insist, add some honey, dates, or maple syrup.

🤹‍♂️Variations

  • Make it more nutritious - add chia seeds or flax and nuts.
  • Make it sweet - add honey, agave, or maple syrup, or simply add some dates when blending if you wish this to be a little sweet.
  • Kids friendly - add less spicy ingredients (black pepper or cayenne pepper) and I would probably add some honey for some extra sweetness but also benefits and to make this more drinkable for them. My kids love it without but they are used to it as they have had it all their life and prefer it without.

📦 How to store ginger and turmeric shots

  • Store the ginger lemon and turmeric shots in glass containers (jars, bottles) with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Keep refrigerated for up to one week when it's time for a new batch.

❓FAQs

Can I use powdered turmeric and ginger?

Yes, you can substitute fresh with 1-2 tablespoons of turmeric and ginger powder, adjusting to your own taste.

Is black pepper necessary?

Yes, black pepper enhances the absorption of curcumin in turmeric so add if you want to benefit the most from this wonderful and powerful ingredient. Black pepper can help boost the absorption of turmeric by as much as 2,000%. Yes, it is right, 2,000%! (source)

Can I store it at room temperature?

Only if consumed within hours. If not, I strongly recommend to store in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.

Can I drink this daily?

While these shots have many health benefits, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Can I add more honey for sweetness?

Adjust honey to taste, but be mindful of added sugars. Adding any form of sweetener is optional and can be omitted. I personally never add any.

Is this spicy?

With all the given quantities, it is not. Of course, if you increase the ginger, black pepper, or cayenne pepper amounts, it might get a bit spicy.

How many ounces of ginger? Would it be equal ginger and turmeric?

      Hi Sue,
I am sorry for not being able to get back to you earlier, I was away, but back and focussed now 😉
Thank you so much for your patience and for stopping by.
With ginger, it is discretionary as it's quice spicy so add as much or as little as you like or your taste buds tolerate, it really depends on personal preference - I normally add a good chunk but I do love ginger.
      Many thanks once again,
      Ramona

Hi Wendy, you certainly can, but the benefits, textute, taste won’t be quite the same. If you could get some lemons, that would be ideal! I also can’t say for sure how kiwi will affect the drink’s shelf life in the fridge, as it’s quite different from lemon. But if you give it a try, I’d love to hear how it turns out!

I had to use powder turmeric and wasn't sure how much, so I went on the lesser side just in case.
Is there a reason why you have to strain and de-pulp, or can you make it a pulp drink? .... and... I did and it was still delish. Just think there are benefits to the pulp 😊

      Hey Lauri
Thank you so much for stopping by. Yes, turmeric powder is as good if you don’t have fresh one. Organic even better if you have the option. I normally use the pulp for breakfast Banana bites or banana bread ( https://www.ramonascuisine.com/sugar-free-banana-bread/ ) or add it to my cereal, smoothies. I strain it because my kids have it as well and they don’t really love the pulp but for myself and hubby I leave the pulp and just shake the bottle before having it. Absolutely!! there is a lot of fibre in there too, I never waste it. ❤️❤️

    Hi

Thank you for this recipe, which I want to try. Just a couple of questions.

Can I use an additional orange (so total 2) instead of the grapefruit?

What size shot glass, or rather how many ml are in your shot glass? Mine is about 25ml.

At what time of day should one drink these?

Thank you so much in advance.

    Thank you in advance.

      Hi Anna-Louise,
Thanks for stopping by! Of course you can substitute the grapefruit for orange(s). There is no right or wrong as long as you add the trio (ginger-turmeric-black pepper). You can certainly customise the rest as you wish. Please do let me know how you liked it. I normally have the shot first thing in the morning before anything else but you may take it any time you like in between meals, before a meal etc.

          Hey Anna-Louise
I normally have 100 ml or just about but it all depends on how diluted I make it as sometimes I add more oranges or water but I would shtick to 3 oz or 100 ml. Thanks a great shot size. I hope this helps.

I LOVE these types of healthy "shots!" I've never tried making the ginger turmeric combo at home until now. This is so much less expensive than getting it from a juice bar! Definitely keeping this handy for winter months.
